SUMMARY

Project collaboration with Ryan Group Architects located in Truckee, CA.

This piece was created for a deeply meaningful collaboration with a long-standing client—a design firm with whom we have partnered for exactly 10 years. Our first project for them was piece #139, and this table marks the milestone of piece #1039, exactly 900 pieces later, delivered on the very same calendar day their first order was placed—a connection that feels truly intentional and destined.

The name Yukari perfectly embodies the spirit of this table: a Japanese concept meaning “connection,” “affinity,” or a bond that transcends time and space. It reflects not only the physical joinery of the wood slabs and the union of materials but also the enduring relationship between client, craft, and home.

Handcrafted from a stunning set of bookmatched walnut slabs, the Yukari Table celebrates connection in both form and story. The slabs are reverse-matched at the center, where their live edges meet creating a beautiful, natural channel that contrasts with the straight-cut outer edges.

That sense of connection carries through to the steel base as well. The vertical leg components and horizontal stretcher are secured using a traditional wood dowel connection system—a time-honored technique more commonly associated with fine woodworking than metal fabrication. The exposed wooden dowel subtly bridges steel to steel, introducing warmth, visual tension, and a tactile reminder of hand craftsmanship. Beyond its understated beauty, this method creates a precise, durable mechanical connection while allowing the materials to move and age gracefully over time.

As part of a cohesive collection designed for a contemporary lakefront residence, the Yukari table blends warmth and structure: a live-edge natural form resting atop a sleek steel base, bringing harmony and balance to any space it inhabits.

Building slab furniture is an extensive process and there are many factors to consider. We cover everything with our clients from how the wood is sourced and sustainably salvaged, to the required drying process, to the criteria for picking out a slab, to the nature of the raw material, to the leveling process, to explaining and expanding on the occurrence of natural wood ‘movement’, and how to best maintain and upkeep the slab once finished.
