SUMMARY

Our ‘Study’ table was a chance for us to put all of our skills to the test - from our work with salvaged slab wood, to creating a design using traditional woodworking techniques and joinery with a minimalist modern aesthetic, all while accommodating a solid wood design. This project was an absolute thrill to see come to life! A set of figured bookmatched claro walnut slabs were the chosen material, inverted and joined seamlessly at the sapwood to create a blonde-colored stripe at the center of the tabletop. A rigid rectangular trestle base adds a contrasting and functional feature, allowing roomy leg space on the table sides. This particular table in the example images was designed to fit in a library study, but can be modified for use as a dining table or to serve other table functions.

The functionality of an oval-shaped dining table combines the linear simplicity of a rectangular top with the intimacy and comfort of a round one, occupying less space. The curved edges can also be more suitable for small spaces allowing more space to move around the table. A half-rounded edge compliments the smooth oval tabletop shape.

This project was a collaboration with Shawback Design from inception to completion. Shawback design is a full service interior design firm serving Northern California, dedicated to every stage of the home build process: from sourcing land to finding the perfect architectural partner, to committing equally to process and style, to offering a complete turn-key experience on completion.

WOOD FINISH OPTIONS

ECO-FRIENDLY HARDWAX OIL FINISH | Our preferred finishing method and product, made from environmentally-friendly components for eco-conscious customers. Osmo Polyx Oil is derived from natural plant oils and waxes, providing a hard-wearing and protective surface that is resistant to common liquid spills. The finish maintains the natural look and feel of the wood, all while offering protection and durability.

SEATING AND TABLE SIZE GUIDELINES

C H O O S I N G T H E R I G H T S I Z E

For use as a dining or kitchen table, bar or conference table: If you are unsure of the exact dimensions your needs require, please consider the following basic guidelines:

Provide each guest 24-30 inches of space at the dining table (chairs range from apprx 16-20" and require at least 6" of space on each side to allow guests to seat comfortably)
Add an extra 12 inches at each end for those seated at the head and foot of the table
Allow for at least 36 inches between the dining table and any walls or other furniture

Building slab furniture is an extensive process and there are many factors to consider.
