SUMMARY

Project collaboration with Ryan Group Architects | Truckee, CA

The table shown in the example images used a repurposed parota slab (also known as guanacaste), cut down the middle with the two sides inverted, where a channel was routed for a glass panel to recess into, and a new modern base was constructed. The clients had owned the slab for years but after moving to a new home they needed the table to be smaller and wider to fit their functionality and space needs, so a complete redesign was necessary. After it's transformation from initial concept to creation, it's become a beautifully updated design while still maintaining the original character of the wood that drew the customers to the wood in the first place.

Parota is an exotic hardwood typically sourced from Central America, Mexico, and the northern part of South America. We can also build this design from a variety of other materials.

We consider this design to be a different take on a traditional “river'“ table, hence where we drew inspiration for the table’s name, ‘Río Truckee’ (translating from Spanish to “Truckee River” which is located nearby the home where the table in the images resides).

Do you have a slab table that you would like to have us repurpose for a new table design? Please feel free to send us pictures and dimensions of your slab and we’d be happy to explore the option of transforming it into a completely different piece.

Building slab furniture is an extensive process and there are many factors to consider. We cover everything with our clients from how the wood is sourced and sustainably salvaged, to the required drying process, to the criteria for picking out a slab, to the nature of the raw material, to the leveling process, to explaining and expanding on the occurrence of natural wood ‘movement’, and how to best maintain and upkeep the slab once finished.
