SUMMARY

Nakama means “companion,” a fitting name for a piece intended to live alongside the people and spaces around it. The design also builds on the trestle structure we first explored with our Framework Table, taking that idea in a new direction.

The table is made from a single slab of salvaged Claro walnut, chosen for its rich color, marbled figure, and character throughout the wood. The straight-cut edges leave the natural movement of the grain visible across both the top and sides.

The trestle base uses simple timber joinery to create a strong, geometric structure beneath the slab. When selecting the components for the legs, we chose each pair as a bookmatch, positioning adjoining pieces so their grain mirrors one another. This brings a subtle sense of symmetry and continuity to the base, allowing the natural figure of the wood to become part of the structure itself. Bookmatching is especially meaningful in a piece like Nakama because it makes use of a relationship that already exists within the wood. Rather than treating each component as an isolated piece, the paired members reveal how the grain was connected before the timber was cut and shaped. The result is a base that feels both ordered and organic, with the mirrored figure creating visual balance while preserving the character and irregularity of the salvaged walnut.

Building slab furniture is an extensive process and there are many factors to consider. We cover everything with our clients from how the wood is sourced and sustainably salvaged, to the required drying process, to the criteria for picking out a slab, to the nature of the raw material, to the leveling process, to explaining and expanding on the occurrence of natural wood ‘movement’, and how to best maintain and upkeep the slab once finished.
