SUMMARY

We have long admired the trestle-style bases of George Nakashima, and aimed to create a modern twist on his traditional mid-century live edge slab tables. We designed the base for our Emblem table that replaces steel as the vertical supportive components of the trestle frame, with a decorative wood stretcher that connects the two ‘legs’. The addition of steel with notched wood stretcher adds a new element to the traditional design.

The chosen slab combines natural, untamed edges with the contrast of abrupt straight-cut lines to to comfortably occupy it’s designated area without intruding into other spaces. This juxtaposition, or blend of opposites ~ natural and controlled elements ~ define this work of functional art. Bowties were added to cracks and inclusions to strengthen critical areas, while natural edges, including remnants of the “crotch” of the tree and a small burl protrusion, were left for texture.

The bastogne walnut slab chosen for this project, opulent with iridescent tiger-stripe-like figure throughout the grain, maintains a chunky thickness at a finished 2 1/4” thick, adding a robustness to the overall magnitude of the piece.

This design is completely customizable and can be made in a variety of materials and finishes, and can be paired with a matching bench.

Building slab furniture is an extensive process and there are many factors to consider. We cover everything with our clients from how the wood is sourced and sustainably salvaged, to the required drying process, to the criteria for picking out a slab, to the nature of the raw material, to the leveling process, to explaining and expanding on the occurrence of natural wood ‘movement’, and how to best maintain and upkeep the slab once finished.
